award-winning master stylist maisha teacher opens bibi salon

On Friday, November 19th, Hope Knight, Executive Director of UMEZ’s Business Resource and Investment Services Center (BRISC), helped award-winning master hair stylist, Maisha Teacher kick-off the opening of her new hair care and beauty salon, Bibi Salon, in Harlem.

The upscale, appointment-only salon is located on Frederick Douglas Boulevard at 120th Street, in close proximity to newly-opened restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques. Bibi Salon specializes in hair color, treatments, extensions and texturizers as well as organic hand and foot treatments, and custom make-up and eyebrow solutions. The full-service co-ed hair salon opens Saturday.

BRISC provided Ms. Teacher with a $115,000 loan to finance build-out and working capital for the salon.

Ms. Teacher is a creative, innovative, and internationally trained freelance celebrity hair stylist with more than 18 years experience providing exceptional service to high-end clientele in Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay area. Teacher currently works as a freelance stylist for NBC local news and Lifestyle Television (LX) in New York City, and as a set stylist for The Jimmy Fallon Show, NBA All Star Weekend, VH1 Hip Hop Honors, the Essence Music Festival and the Food Network. Her extensive training includes advanced certifications from leading industry experts such as, Vidal Sassoon, Sebastian, Grahm Web Academy, Phytologie, Phytospecific, Privé, Wella, Wella Trend, Trucco, Loreal, Goldwell, Alterna, Champ Camp, Matrix, and Mac Pro.

“At BRISC we are dedicated to supporting and encouraging the stability and growth of the small business community in Upper Manhattan through financial, as well as technical assistance,” said Ms. Knight. “We see our investment in Bibi Salon, as well as several other businesses in the immediate vicinity as an investment in the future of Harlem.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to bring a unique, luxury salon experience to the ever-thriving Harlem community,” said Teacher. “From the renaissance to the millennium, Harlem has always set the standard for cultural trends and I’m proud to be a part of this ongoing movement. I’m looking forward to servicing the residents of Harlem, as well as guests to the city, and my long-time clientele.”

As part of its community outreach initiatives, Bibi Salon has partnered with area businesses to provide makeovers to deserving mothers. Each month, a selected “Mojo Mama” will receive a professional photo shoot with an expert photographer, and a complete style redo including hair, makeup and a wardrobe consultant! Guests looking to nominate a “Mojo Mama” can submit their nominations online or complete a form at their next visit.
